Creating characters that resonate with readers is at the heart of all good fiction and drama. But too often during the writing process, characters slip out of their creators' grasp – their motivations become unfathomable, their dialogue wooden and it becomes increasingly hard to fit them into those interesting plot ideas that made writing that novel, story, play or film script so attractive in the first place.
In this intensive two-day course, novelist, performer and playwright Mia Gallagher will introduce participants to skills and techniques for developing and understanding characters. What they are, how they sound, how they think and feel, what they want and how you can work with them to bring your stories more vividly to life. The course will employ writing exercises, theatre games and a high level of feedback and dialogue.
Participants are urged to bring along any particularly recalcitrant, difficult or inaccessible fictional characters they might be working on.
