Writing Historical Fiction with John Givens

21st September to 23rd November: Tuesdays 6.30-8.30pm

Writers who set their stories in a historical context face unique challenges. We will explore methods for creating a fictional world that is self-consistent, credible, entertaining, and populated by believable characters authentic to their time and place. We will ponder how to balance the requirements of historical truth against the pleasures of the imagination. This will include the development of fictional occurrences set against factual settings, as well as the fictionalisation of actual events. This ten-week workshop is intended for novelists and short story writers who are seeking thoughtful feedback on a work in progress, and also for those writers who are just getting started in historical fiction.
