Intermediate Creative Writing with Nessa O'Mahoney

2nd May - 6th June: Weds 6.30pm-8.30pm €165/150 members

You’ve taken your first steps into creative writing; this six-week course will provide you with the skills and confidence to develop your own voice and experiment with a variety of forms and genres. During the six weeks, we’ll examine poetry, poetic form and imagery, novels and short fiction, screenplays, radio plays, and scriptwriting. The emphasis will be on generating new work, and finding ways to improve existing work. We’ll also look at examples from other writers in order to analyse technique and learn more about the craft. The approach will consist of a combination of in-class tuition and exercises and peer critiquing of work in progress.

Nessa O’Mahony

Nessa O’Mahony was one of the first writers in Ireland to complete a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing in 2007. She has published two collections of poems, Bar Talk (iTaLicS Press, 1999) and Trapping a Ghost (Bluechrome, 2005). Her verse novel In Sight of Home was published by Salmon in 2009. Her poetry has appeared in a number of Irish, UK, and North American periodicals, has been translated into several European languages. She won the National Women’s Poetry Competition in 1997 and was shortlisted for the Patrick Kavanagh Prize and Hennessy Literature Awards.

She was a recipient of an Arts Council of Ireland literature bursary in 2005 and an artists’ bursary from South Dublin County Council in 2007. She was artist in residence at the John Hume Institute for Global Irish Studies in University College Dublin in 2008-2009. She teaches creative writing with the Open University and is a regular facilitator of creative writing workshops in Ireland and the UK.

"Nessa O'Mahony's writing is subtle and precise and this fine book crackles with truthfulness. But even more importantly, this is a work of great beauty, a story of how past and present flow into one another all the time. It's a moving, powerful and richly pleasurable read, audaciously imagined and achieved." Joseph O'Connor on In Sight of Home.
