20th September to 25th October: Mondays 6.30-8.30pm
Memoir comes wrapped in all kinds of health warnings - consideration for others; not breaking trust; not spilling secrets. But what memoir is really about is telling a story, your story. The practical aim of this course is to get you thinking; researching; writing and editing.
Beginning with the discipline of writing and finding the parameters within which you want to work, the course will examine approaches to finding the truth; assembling the photographs and memories that are the framework of a work of memoir; beginning your journey; assessing what it is you do and don't want to say; reappraising ideas and completing the work.
We will deal with the daily grind of any writer - inspiration; discipline and setting yourself realistic deadlines. We'll look at the memoir work writers from Laurie Lee to Vincent VanGogh to Leonard Cohen and draw on what we uncover to help shape your work.
Most importantly, this course is about not being afraid to say what you want to say.
