Ongoing James Plunkett Short Story Award

Sponsored by the 1913 Lockout Commemoration, Dublin UNESCO City of Literature,

Dublin City Council, Dublin City Libraries and ICTU

Organised by the Irish Writers' Union in partnership with the Irish Writers' Centre.

We are delighted to announce the 2013 James Plunkett Short Story Award for new and emerging writing talent. James Plunkett was known as one of Ireland's greatest social commentators. A founder member of the Irish Writers' Union, James Plunkett's seminal work, Strumpet City, still stands as one of the great Irish works of the 20th century. This year, it is of particular importance as it allows the reader to access the story behind the 1913 Dublin Lockout.

The Award will be presented on 16th October 2013 at the Irish Writers' Centre.

1st prize: €2,000

2nd prize: €1,000

Ongoing RASP

The call is for a new anthology, 'Disobedience', which will be a collection of work by dyslexic writers that will focus on the theme of ‘disobedience and subversion’. That is, the way in which dyslexics are perceived to be defiant and disobedient when 'difference' is misunderstood, or misinterpreted and the kinds of affect this has on ones self-image, sense of self and meaning making. The purpose is twofold, first to give a voice to writers marginalised by prejudices Second, to provide a fresh approach to thinking about dyslexia by opening up a critical debate about authorship.

Ongoing Ó Bhéal Five Words International Poetry Competition

Each week on Tuesday at midday (GMT), from the 16th of April 2013, five words are posted on this competition page. Entrants then have one week to compose and submit poems that must include all five words.

At noon next Tuesday, these words will no longer be eligible, and replaced with five new words. The competition will run for a total of forty weeks, until the last week of January 2014.

Prize

A prize of 500 euro will be awarded to one winner, and if available, then invited to read at Ó Bhéal’s seventh anniversary event, on Monday 14th of April, 2014 (an additional travel fee of 100 euro plus B&B accommodation will be provided for this). The shortlisted poems and winning entry will also be published in Five Words Vol VII – the next annual anthology of five word poems, launched at the same event.

A panel of poets from the Ó Bhéal board will adjudicate, and a shortlist of twelve poems including the overall winner will be announced during the first week of March, 2014.

The five words offered each week for 2013-14 have been sourced from the audiences of the first fifty Five Word Challenges (held each Monday evening during 2007-8 at Ó Bhéal – with a few extra words added due to deletion of duplicates). They are then selected from this list randomly.
